The current state of digital ownership for the majority of individuals is close to zero percent. Entities, if they own server space, technically own the data while it sits in their server. Ownership implies controls over security, privacy, consent of use, and continuing knowledge of the status of an asset at all times. The terms and conditions of today’s data driven platforms allow partial control due to underdeveloped, democracy-undermining technology.

It may be stated more accurately that oligarchy rather than democracy describes the distribution, monetization, and ownership of today’s data.

Certain privileged entities, those who have provided invaluable free services such as email, social media, and e-commerce platforms, are the beneficiaries of data monetization. In this way, ‘free’ services are definitely not free. The cost is one’s ownership of data, privacy, and consent along with being monetized (used) for billions of dollars in data sales.

While some people may profess to “not really mind” this oligarchical system, the enthusiasm and joy of having control, utilizing consent, and being incentivized from one’s digital data is lost. Thereby, screen time may feel like a form of enslavement after consideration and thought.

The whole point of the United States of America, according to the Declaration of Independence, is “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Lofty as it might seem, having these words written into one of America’s founding documents highlights the importance and foundational reasons for our national existence. No other country in the world has such ideals as founding governance values.

Once democracy-building technology is unleashed, other countries will also benefit and be able to enjoy democracy in a digital form.

Interestingly, the pandemic of 2020 has motivated the growth and momentum of FISE Portal, as a team has assembled after three years of solo entrepreneurship.

This is a very unique time in the history of democracy, one where FISE Portal’s future platform for compliance harmoniously combines the laws of compliance, privacy, and consent, and in so doing, pushes America closer to realizing the ideals articulated in its founding documents.
